Can you believe it's already Create and Share Challenge time!?! Me either! This month my amazing blogging friends and I have teamed up with Wise Owl Paints to bring you a project that I am so excited to share and to make it even more exciting we will be giving away a Wise Owl Paint package! So don't forget to scroll to the bottom of this post to enter!
This particular project actually started late last summer when I cam across a set of 4 half porch columns at my favorite junk store. I knew the instant I saw them I wanted to make a table out of them. But after running into some logistical issues, the project sat in my garage untouched for several months.
I finally decided around Thanksgiving it was time to give this project another go. A trip back to my favorite junk store brought be a beautiful old chippy door complete with lock plate cover and decorative hinges. Thanksgiving also provided me with one more key element, my Father-In law. He is my creative build saving grace. He always knows what to do and helps me with my projects. I couldn't possibly thank him enough for this! After a few brainstorming sessions we finally came up with a plan. Our new plan required one more trip back to the junk store in hopes that they still had an old louver door I had seen a few weeks prior. We were in luck!
So while I was busy cooking Thanksgiving dinner my Father-In law was busy in the garage building our new table. He started by laying everything out to see sizing and spacing. Then he cut and reinforced the louver door by an adding plywood underneath. Next he filled the decorative recessed panels on the underside of the door with plywood to provide a sturdy place to attach the heavy columns.
Then all of the pieces were again stacked together and measured to determine how long the posts of the tables needed to be. After all of the measuring and cutting had been completed he used a combination of liquid nails and wood screws to secure the table together.
When I first started this project I had intended to leave all the materials in their original chippy condition but later decided against it. There were too many colors involved (gray, red, white, ivory, mint green, brown, natural wood both aged and new) So instead I decided to paint the base of the table and leave the top in its original chippy state. After sanding and cleaning each piece I was ready to paint!
When my paints arrived from Wise Owl I was delighted to find a new Cling On Paint brush in the package! This paint brush seriously changed the way I look at painting! In the past when I paint I end up with little speckles all over everything. But not with the Cling On Brush! My paint never dripped, splattered, or speckled! From now on this will be the only brush I use!!
Once the Antique White paint was thoroughly mixed I was ready to get started! The Wise Owl Paint went on quickly and smoothly. Within a few minutes my table began to take on a whole new look.
After letting the paint dry for a full 24 hours I applied a light coat of the Driftwood glaze. The glaze helped to bring out the old imperfections in the wood. Giving the whole piece a slightly weatheredaged look that perfectly complemented all my salvaged materials.
I am so in love with our new dining table and I can't thank my Father-In law or Wise Owl Paints enough for making my vision come true! Now we finally have a table that is big enough for the whole family to sit around!
