Can you believe how fast March has come and gone?!? It is already time for another Create and Share Challenge! This month we were lucky enough to team up with Walnut Hollow. They challenged us to use one of their beautiful wood products and a wood burner to create our own one of a kind home decor.
To help you prepare for this project I have collected all the items you need on a handy pinnable recipe card just for you. To make it even easier all you have to do is click and shop! (Contains Affiliate Links)
I started by taking all the slats and the dividers out of my tray and redividing the open space so it was even across the back.
Next I got online and looked up the official proportions of the flag. After doing a lot of math and photoshop editing I finally came up with a design that would cover my entire pallet tray while also keeping the flag as proportionally accurate as possible. After printing the image I taped it all back together using scotch tape. Finally I taped my design onto my Pallet Wood Tray and started burning in my pattern.
After all 50 of my stars were completed I started the stripes. I knew I wanted to give my flag a rough and tumble look as if I had just come home from the war, so I didn't want my stripes to be perfectly crisp. To keep from burning crisp perfect linesI kept the pressure of the burner very light as I moved over each line.
After learning the lesson the hard way on my practice board I made sure to mark each "red" stripe with an R. Finally I used the shading point to fill in all the "red" and "blue" areas of the flag.
To help create texture and unevenness through the dark areas I used the different sides of the bit to add movement through the flag as if it was waving.
To make each shelf I used a 3/4 x 1/2 wood board cut to size then cut a "L" shaped notch in the back of each. This helps to keep each coin in place. After all 3 of my shelves were added I burned in the last bit of texture throughout the white areas making the flag look beat up.
In the end I love the way his new coin box turned out. Now he has a place to display all of his beautiful coins.
I am truly blessed to have such an amazing man in my life and I hope every time he sees his new coin box on the wall he will think of me too.
I hope you have enjoyed our Walnut Hollow Create and Share Challenge as much as we have! I am so honored to work with such a talented group of ladies I hope you stop by to check out all of their projects.
