Hi Everyone!
If you’ve followed me with any kind of regularity you know I love to change up my seasonal decorating using textiles, and more specifically throw pillows. They are fun, soft, comfortable, and they don’t require a lot of fuss. But I also don’t have the space to store a 1,000 different throw pillows. In comes pillow covers.
For each season I love to switch out my pillow covers and today I am going to show you how I’ve made my latest pillow cover in about 7 minutes and the whole project cost me about $7. Way more reasonable then those $50 throw pillows right! Keeping me on budget for this holiday season.
Christmas Place Mat
- Thrift Store/Garage Sale Button Down Shirt
- Thread to Match
- Pillow Insert
- Seamstress Measuring Tape
- Fabric Scissors
- Seamstress Machine/Needle and Thread
- Sewing Pins
To start my Fast and Easy Christmas Pillow I grabbed a thrifted button down shirt from my stash and laid the place mat on top, aligning the buttons to run down the middle.
Next I cut around the edge of the place mat leaving approximately a 0.5 allowance.
Then I turned the place mat over so the right sides were together and pinned it, paying extra attention to the ends where the two pieces of shirt fabric were buttoned together. Next I quickly ran it through my sewing machine, keeping the seam allowance as small as possible.
When all my stitches were in place I unbuttoned the shirt and turned my pillow cover right side out. Then I inserted my pillow and re-buttoned the shirt fabric.
That’s it! The whole project took less then 7 minutes to make and the results are cute as a button! I have an adorable new Fast and Easy Christmas Pillow Cover and it takes up almost zero space when it’s time to pack everything away. Making this the best kind of Christmas Decor!

Hi Pat!
I bought it at Target. If you look at the project list, where it says placemat it will take you directly to targets page. I beleive Target is offering free shipping on all orders right now too! So its a great time to buy! Good luck with your project!
