Hi Everyone!

Today is the day!  The day I am so excited to share with you!  Today is our big reveal for our New Year, New Room Refresh Challenge that was hosted by my beautiful and amazing friend Stephanie at Casa Watkins Living.

While I didn’t accomplish everything on my list, in just 30 days we took our living room from 1980’s drab to bright, beautiful and utterly amazing!!

Just to give you a little reminder, this is what our living room looked like before our New Year, New Room Living Room Refresh Reveal.

It was a little boring, a little tired, and a little dark, even though the room wasn’t necessarily dark.  It just wasn’t cutting it.   The fireplace is massive and asymmetrical, like everything else from 1987, so I thought the only way to balance it was to add lots and lots of stuff to it.   Which worked for a while, but ultimately I felt the room was becoming a bit too crowded.

So after a great deal of thought and decluttering, I came up with a design plan to bring it back to life.   That plan focused largely around the dunt, dun, na-nah… yes, that gigantic fireplace.

While I am actually still working on the fireplace (I still need to add all the trim) it has come a long, long way from where it started just a few weeks ago.

My fireplace is now light, bright, clean, and airy thanks to new tiles from Smart Tiles, some beautiful cream seagrass wallpaper from Wallpaper Boulevard, and a little bit of fresh paint.   It is probably the single most significant change in my whole room, and it isn’t even finished yet!!!  I can’t wait to see how it will look once I add the trim next week.  It has finally crawled out of the depths of 1980’s snoozeville and into the beautiful, bright world.

I’m sure you are dying to find out all the details on how I transformed this sleeping giant, and I have them all!  Starting tomorrow I’ll be sharing all the glorious step by step diy goodness I used to transform this beast into a beautiful lady.

The second most impactful element, by just a hair, in this room makeover would have to be my new rug from LampsPlus.   I had been so afraid of upgrading my old blue rug, to something lighter because we have two large dogs and a munchkin, but I am so so glad I did.  This rug is the perfect option.  It is light enough that it makes the whole room feel bigger, but it also has enough texture and color variations to hid all the dog hair, dirt and whatever else that builds up from day to day.

Another major factor in cleaning up my drab living room was making new covers for my grandparent’s 1940’s mid century modern chairs.   The upholstery from before was already starting to look sad.  It was dirty from everyday use and the fabric seemed to be yellowing in very unpleasant way.

So I took a note from my Ikea couch and made washable slipcovers.  They get dirty, they go in the wash.  No more living with dingy upholstery!

Last but most certainly not least to do in my Living Room Refresh was to add a little bit of color back into my space.  Over the last year I had neutralized it too much.  It needed a little life, so I teamed up with my friends at World Market to punch it back up with a few new beautiful accents, a few DIY Pillows, and some DIY Abstract Watercolor Art.  Now this room has so much life in it, but it doesn’t feel over done.

To finish off living room refresh I gave my drum table, and coffee table a much needed makeover and replaced my rather limp curtains with some lush new ones.

  1. Beautiful room! The tile on the fireplace really makes it look so glamorous and I love all the pop of colors and textures used. I especially love the pillow covers. Did you make those?

    1. Hi Kelley!

Thank you so much! I did make those pillows! They are super fast and easy envelope pillow covers. Like these one’s I made this fall. Envelope pillows are my favorite! They are easy to store and really inexpensive to make!

  2. So fresh and lovely, Cat! Those floral pillows, pops of blue and gorgeous natural textures throughout the space are such a treat! I’m loving your mantel styling and rug! What a beautiful space to relax and spend some time in!!

  3. What a beautiful transformation, Cat!! It’s so fresh and bright, but still so warm and comfortable. I love all the little pops of color you used, and I totally feel you on the struggle to find textile items that are light enough yet still hide the dog hair and dust!

Your challenge has inspired me to do a new year, new room makeover of my own. If you have a minute to check out my plans, I’d be honored 🙂 https://seagraindesign.wordpress.com/2017/01/26/new-year-new-room-living-room-plans/

    Cheers!

    1. Thank you so much Rachel! I really appreciate it! I love the way our new room turned out and I have to say, so far I am really impressed how much all the dog hair is staying hidden! It’s a nice break!!
